Who Must Apply for ESTA?

All travelers entering the United States (by air or by sea) are required under the

Visa Waiver Program to have a valid ESTA travel permit. The purpose of ESTA is to help the US Department of Homeland Security pre-authorize all Visa Waiver travelers before they leave their respective countries. Travelers going to the USA are advised to apply for a travel permit at least 72 hours before departure. We always recommend that you apply for ESTA before you book your trip.

What is the Visa Waiver Program?

The Visa Waiver Program is a program through the United States government which enables citizens of the 40 Visa Waiver countries to enter the United States for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days without the need for a visa. The advantage of entering the US under the Visa Waiver Program is that you can travel to the US at short notice without obtaining a visa in advance.

Important information about ESTA:

  • ESTA is valid for 24 months from the date of approval (or until your passport expires – if your passport expires within the next 24 months)

  • ESTA is a visa with the possibility of multiple entries where each stay cannot exceed 90 days.

  • ESTA’s 90-day maximum limit does not start counting until you arrive in the US;

  • The holder of an ESTA has the right to undertake tourism and certain business activities such as explore job opportunities, make contact with business contacts, travel in connection with scientific, educational, professional or company conventions or conferences; and

  • The holder of an ESTA is not allowed to engage in any work, study or training.

Please note that you will not be allowed to enter the US on an ESTA if you have been convicted of certain criminal offences. Check with your local US consulate before applying for an ESTA visa.

Does a travel permit guarantee entry to the United States?

If the Electronic Travel Authorization is approved, this approval confirms that you are eligible  to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, but does not guarantee that you will be admitted to the United States. Upon arrival in the United States, you will be inspected by border control where you arrive, who may determine that you are inadmissible for entry under the Visa Waiver Program or for other reasons, under US law.

Is ESTA the same as a visa?

No, an approved ESTA is not a visa. It does not meet the legal or regulatory requirements to serve in lieu of a US visa when a visa is required by US law. Individuals who hold a valid visa will still be able to travel to the United States for the same purposes as those for which the visa was issued. People traveling with valid visas do not need to apply for an ESTA.

How long is the ESTA travel permit valid for?

Unless revoked, the travel permit will be valid for two years from the date of approval, or until the pass expires, whichever occurs first.

Do citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program need to obtain an ESTA if they are only passing through the United States on their way to another country?

Eligible nationals or citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program must have either an ESTA or transit visa for the United States. If a traveler only intends to travel through the United States on the way to another country, he or she must write “In Transit” when applying for ESTA, and his or her final destination is entered in the address field Address For Stay in the United States.
